Hey Randy, thanks for the invite. What do you think of Wallop? I like the interface, it is interesting to see a Microsoft product using flash. Anyone want to take any bets on Microsoft releasing their own equivalent? I think it has a ways to go but I think the community is more focused than that of Orkut, since most of the members seem to be fellow Geeks. Speaking of Orkut, I think it is interesting that it has taken off so powerfully in Brazil. It seems to me that Google has done a good thing to break into this market. I wonder how well the other social networks are doing in Brazil. I don't think Wallop will be as popular there because it is not as focussed on communities.

Re: The tribe has spoken!
Fri, November 12, 2004 - 8:07 AMWell, I think Wallop will likely compete w/ Friendster. Tribe and Orkut have a niche that doesn't overlap w/ Wallop. Wallop may also negate Flickr.
I'm voting that Wallop is going to be big. And maybe someday, they'll port it to a Longhorn application. Embrass and guide the flock back to your nest egg ;) -

Mon, November 15, 2004 - 8:00 PMInteresting... I am not sure I agree that Wallop will negate Flickr. I think the focus of the two services are moving in different directions. I have used Orkut and Friendster but I don't see any serious use for them. Of all of these services Flickr is the only one that is actually making money from accounts. Flickr is very near and dear to my heart. I can see so much potential. The idea is great and they have built an awsome community. Wallop will also pack some serious power when it starts becoming integrated with other MS apps like Messenger. It is kind of early to tell where all of this will go when so many of these services are still in beta. -

Mon, November 15, 2004 - 8:51 PMI also wonder about Flickr. They've made a big splash, but mostly in the geek community. I see a lot of cool things in Flickr, but nothing that I would actually use beyond awing. -

Re: The tribe has spoken!
Mon, November 15, 2004 - 10:15 PMHow about cheap storage for starters. Right now for $40 you can get a pro account which allows you to upload 1 GB worth of pictures every month. That is a s*it ton of pictures. My sister has about a gig of pictures from Africa that I wanted to post somewhere but I wasn't sure how I was going to go about doing that. Most basic hosting accounts only give you from 100 - 200 mb. There are some that are popping up that give you more now but you still have to deal with the bandwidth. Flickr allows direct linking to both the thumnail and the sized pictures. I can build a photo album with as many pictures as I have uploaded to Flickr and they all appear as if hosted at my own site. I can have several gigs worth of pictures and not be using any of my own space (or bandwidth). At times the pages may load slower because they are being retrieved from Flickr but I think the trade off is worth it. -

Re: The tribe has spoken!
Tue, November 16, 2004 - 4:52 AMDoh, I wish I could edit my posts on this thing. Just wanted to throw in a couple of more things. Social networks get me fired up. Maybe we should start a new group just for them. The $40 gets you a year subscription for 1 gig every month. So you can post up to 12 gigs of pictures in one year. All of the pictures are saved, so your old ones do not "drop off" after a certain time frame has passed. They also have an API which people have been doing some cool things with. Going back to my hosting provider only giving me 100 mb of space. Does this sound outdated to you? I have this feeling that the floodgates on storage are about to bust wide open with Google having lead the way. I think services such as Flickr is showing further evidence of how cheap storage is becoming. Will hosting providers be able to continue to be competitive by allowing such little space? I am feeling cheated when I have more space in my hotmail account than I have available on my hosting provider. Maybe it is time to start doing some shopping around. The only way service providers listen is when consumers start walking. Right now I am paying for 4 accounts at about $10 each. Ok, it is 5 am, I have been doing homework all night, I am rambling... good night =) -
